Warning Signs Worth Taking Seriously

Problem gambling rarely announces itself. It arrives as a series of small changes that each seem reasonable at the time. These are the ones worth noticing early, while noticing is still enough.

Free, confidential, 24 hours a day. National Problem Gambling Helpline: 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738) — call, text, or chat at 1800myreset.org. Florida: 888-ADMIT-IT (888-236-4848).

In your own betting

Staking more than you planned, and doing it regularly rather than once. Betting to recover losses rather than because you like the spot. Needing larger stakes to feel the same interest. Finding you think about betting at times when you are not betting. Betting when you feel low, bored or anxious, rather than when you want to. Lying about or minimising how much you have staked, including to yourself when you add it up.

In your money

Borrowing to bet, from anyone or anything, including a card or an advance. Using money set aside for something else and intending to replace it. Missing a payment because funds went elsewhere. Being unable to say roughly what you are up or down over the last few months. Hiding statements or clearing a betting history.

In the rest of your life

Pulling back from people. Irritability when you cannot bet or when you are interrupted while betting. Sleep going. Work or study slipping. Losing interest in things that used to hold it. Relief at the thought of betting rather than enjoyment of it. That last shift, from enjoyment to relief, is the one that matters most and the easiest to miss from inside.

What to do if several of these fit

Call. The national helpline is 1-800-MY-RESET, which is 1-800-697-3738, by phone, text or chat at 1800myreset.org, free and confidential at any hour. In Florida, 888-ADMIT-IT, which is 888-236-4848. You do not need to have decided to stop, and you do not need to describe it as a problem. People call to think out loud, and that is a reasonable use of the service.

If it is someone else

You do not need their permission to get advice, and you do not need to confront them to start. Both helplines above take calls from family and friends and will talk through how to approach it. Taking over their money or paying off a debt tends to remove the consequence without changing anything, and the services will have better suggestions than that.

If things feel worse than that

If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, please contact the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988 in the United States. It is free, confidential and available around the clock. Gambling problems carry a serious weight and you do not have to sit with it alone.

Common Questions

Can someone have a problem without losing huge amounts?

Yes. Severity is measured by the effect on your life and your control over the behaviour, not by the size of the losses. Plenty of people with real problems are not down large sums.

Is betting every day a warning sign on its own?

Not by itself. Frequency matters less than whether you are staying inside limits you set, whether you can stop, and whether it is still something you enjoy rather than something you need.

What is the difference between a bad run and a problem?

A bad run is about results. A problem is about control: betting more than you intended, chasing, hiding it, or being unable to stop when you decide to. You can have a problem while winning.

Will calling a helpline put me on a list?

No. The helplines are confidential. They are information and support services, not enforcement, and nothing is reported to a sportsbook or an employer.
