Betting Without It Costing You
This is the part of the site most likely to save you money. Not because the picks are bad, but because most people who lose at sports betting lose through staking and chasing rather than through selection. The pages here cover the mechanics of keeping it under control, and where to go if it has stopped being under control.

If you need help right now
The National Problem Gambling Helpline is 1-800-MY-RESET, which is 1-800-697-3738. It takes calls and texts and runs a chat service at 1800myreset.org, free and confidential, 24 hours a day, every day. In Florida the state line is 888-ADMIT-IT, which is 888-236-4848, also 24 hours and multilingual. You do not need to be in crisis to call either one, and you do not need to have decided anything first.
The one rule that matters most
Decide what you can lose before you bet, and treat that number as spent the moment you deposit it. Everything else on these pages is a refinement of that. A bettor who sets a limit and keeps it has a bad month. A bettor who sets no limit, or moves it, can have a bad year without noticing until it is done.
Betting is entertainment, not income
The arithmetic is against you by design. At standard -110 pricing you must win 52.38 percent of your bets simply to break even, and the gap between that and a coin flip is the house edge working on every bet you place. Some people beat it. Most who believe they are beating it are inside a sample too small to tell. Treating betting as a source of income means relying on an edge you probably cannot prove, with money you need.
Signs worth taking seriously
Betting more than you planned. Betting to win back losses. Hiding the amount or the frequency from people close to you. Borrowing to bet. Feeling you need a bigger stake to get the same interest. Betting when you are low rather than when you want to. Any one of these is worth noticing. Several together is worth acting on, and acting on it early is enormously easier than acting on it later.
Tools that exist and work
Every licensed sportsbook in the United States offers deposit limits, time limits, loss limits and a cooling-off period, and most people never open the page. They take two minutes to set and they bind you when the decision is harder to make. Self-exclusion goes further and is covered on its own page. None of these is an admission of anything; they are the same sort of ordinary precaution as a spending cap on a card.
For someone else
If you are reading this because of another person, both helplines above take calls from family and friends, and that is a large share of what they do. You do not need the person to agree to it, and you do not need to have a plan before you call.
Common Questions
Is the helpline really free and confidential?
Yes. The national helpline at 1-800-MY-RESET is free, confidential and available 24 hours a day by call, text or chat. Florida’s 888-ADMIT-IT is the same, and multilingual.
I am not addicted, I just want to control it better. Is that worth a call?
Yes, and that is a large part of what these services are for. Setting limits and talking it through early is far easier than unwinding a problem that has had time to grow.
Does setting a deposit limit affect my account?
No. It is a setting on your own account, it does not restrict anything other than what you asked it to restrict, and it does not get reported anywhere.
Whatever happened to 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738)?
It is no longer the national helpline number. Following a legal dispute in late 2025 the National Council on Problem Gambling returned to 1-800-MY-RESET, which is 1-800-697-3738. Many sites still print the old number. Use the current one.
