Setting Limits That Hold

A limit works when you set it while calm and it binds you while you are not. That is the whole trick, and it is why limits set inside the sportsbook beat limits held in your head.

Start with the number you can lose

Not the number you expect to lose, and not the number you hope to turn into more. The number that could vanish entirely without changing anything about your month. That is your bankroll. If no such number exists right now, that is a clear answer about whether to be betting at this point, and it is a temporary condition rather than a verdict.

Size the bet to the bankroll, not the game

One to two percent of your bankroll per bet keeps you solvent through the losing stretches that will certainly happen. At one percent, fifteen losses in a row, which is entirely normal at a coin-flip-adjacent win rate, costs you fifteen percent of your roll. At ten percent per bet the same run takes almost everything. The size of the bet should never depend on how good the game looks, because the games that look best are not reliably the ones that win.

Use the limits the book already gives you

Deposit limits cap what goes in over a day, week or month. Loss limits stop play at a set figure. Time limits cap the session. Cooling-off locks the account for a fixed stretch. All four are in the responsible gambling settings of every licensed book in the country, they take about two minutes, and increases usually carry a waiting period by regulation, which is precisely the feature you want. The waiting period is not an obstacle; it is the limit doing its job.

Never deposit mid-session

The decision to add money after losing is made by a different person than the one who set the budget. Deposit once, at the start, and if it is gone then the session is over. This single habit prevents more damage than any other on this page.

Keep a record you cannot argue with

Write down every bet, the stake, the price and the result. Two things happen. You find out what you are actually up or down, which is almost never what you remember, and the act of recording a bet introduces a pause between the impulse and the stake. People who track honestly bet less, and the reduction comes out of the worst bets first.

Decide in advance what a bad month looks like

Pick a figure at which you stop for the rest of the month, and write it down before the month starts. Having the rule in place removes the need to make a hard judgement at the exact moment you are least equipped to make it.

Common Questions

What percentage of my bankroll should one bet be?

One to two percent for most people. Going above three percent means a normal losing run does real damage to the roll and to your decision-making at the same time.

Should I raise my stakes when I am winning?

Only by recalculating the same percentage against a bankroll that has genuinely grown. Raising the percentage because of a hot run is the most common way winning runs get handed back.

How do I set a deposit limit?

In the responsible gambling or account settings of your sportsbook. Lowering it usually takes effect at once; raising it usually requires a waiting period, which is the point of it.

Is chasing losses always a problem?

Betting more because you are down is the behaviour that turns a manageable loss into an unmanageable one, and it is the single most reliable warning sign. If you notice yourself doing it, stop for the day.
