Betting NFL Season Futures
Season win totals are the most handicappable futures market
Unlike an outright championship price, a win total is a single number about one team, and you can build a view on it from schedule strength, roster change and regression. It is also priced months in advance, which gives the diligent bettor time the market does not always use well. If you bet NFL futures at all, win totals are where the work pays best.
Regression is the strongest single input
Teams that finished unusually well or badly in close games tend to move toward the middle the following year, because one-score outcomes are substantially luck. A team that went nine and one in games decided by a touchdown is very unlikely to repeat it. The market knows this in principle, but it still anchors on last season more than the evidence justifies.
Schedule strength is knowable and underused
The schedule is published and the opponents are known. Strength of schedule, the number of road games in difficult environments, short weeks and the bye placement are all available information before anyone has played. Combining a regression view with a schedule view is a reasonable method for finding win totals that look wrong.
Futures tie up money for a long time
A win total settled in January is money you cannot use between August and then. That opportunity cost is real and it is rarely counted. Before taking a futures position, ask whether the edge you believe you have is bigger than the value of being able to use that stake on single games across five months.
Injuries can end a position in September
A season-long bet on a team is substantially a bet on one quarterback staying healthy. That risk is not priced into the number in any way you can hedge cheaply, and it is the main reason even well-reasoned futures positions fail. Size accordingly, and expect a share of them to be dead by week four.
Our approach to season-long markets
We treat futures as a small part of the picture rather than the centre of it, and every selection we publish is graded publicly when it settles. The season-long record sits alongside the daily one on our verified records page.
Common Questions
Are NFL win totals a good bet?
They are the most handicappable futures market, because you are pricing one number about one team using published schedule information and regression analysis.
What is the biggest factor in season win totals?
Regression in one-score games. Teams with unusually good or bad close-game records move toward the middle, and the market still anchors on last season more than it should.
What is the downside of futures betting?
Your money is tied up for months, and a single quarterback injury can end the position in September with no cheap way to hedge.
Should I bet futures before or after the schedule release?
After, if you want to use schedule strength. Opponents, travel, short weeks and bye placement are all knowable and are frequently underused.
