Understanding betting odds is the foundation of sports betting. Once you master odds, you can calculate payouts, identify value, and make informed decisions about every bet.

American Odds (Moneyline)

American odds use plus and minus signs. The minus sign shows how much you bet to win $100. The plus sign shows how much you win on a $100 bet.

  • -150: Bet $150 to win $100 (favorite)
  • +130: Bet $100 to win $130 (underdog)
  • -110: Standard spread juice — bet $110 to win $100

Converting Odds to Probability

To find implied probability from American odds: For favorites, divide the odds by (odds + 100). For -150: 150/(150+100) = 60% implied probability. For underdogs, divide 100 by (odds + 100). For +130: 100/(130+100) = 43.5% implied probability.

Decimal Odds

Decimal odds show total return per dollar bet including your stake. 2.50 decimal means bet $100, get $250 back ($150 profit). Convert American to decimal: (+130 = 2.30, -150 = 1.67).

The Juice/Vig

The -110 on both sides of a spread is the juice — how sportsbooks make money. At -110, you need to win 52.4% of bets to break even. This is why finding value and line shopping matters so much.
